LTCO and Other Advocates are Quoted in Nursing Home Eviction Article by the Associated Press

May 11, 2016

In the article by the Associated Press, “Nursing Homes Using Eviction to Discharge Difficult Residents” the AP reports that more nursing homes are turning to eviction to get rid of their “most challenging residents.” The article quotes many experts in the field talking about the consequences of the trend and pointing out that the evictions of the elderly and disabled from long-term care facilities are testing laws aimed at protecting “society’s most vulnerable.” For example, Michigan Elder Justice Initiative attorney Alison Hirschel says the seniors affected are losing everything and, “It’s completely devastating.” The American Health Care Association says the discharge process used by nursing homes is lawful and necessary to protect other residents. The article also uses long-term care ombudsmen program data to highlight the problems with nursing home evictions.
