Experts say nursing homes were never designed for this level of mental health care, and systemic gaps often leave them as a default placement for vulnerable individuals. Combined with factors like isolation, aging, and stigma, these shortcomings increase risks for residents, while efforts to improve care, such as policy changes and expanded services, remain inconsistent and slow.
