Connecticut State Ombudsman, Mairead Painter, Interviewed on Nursing Home Spending and Quality Care

Connecticut State Ombudsman, Mairead Painter, was interviewed on how nursing homes are using Medicaid funds and quality care. Mairead said her staff hasn’t had the time to study whether there is a correlation between direct care spending and quality care. “But one thing I can say is the smaller mom and pops — where you have less overhead and more of the investment right in the building — that’s where we see better quality of care, because the owners are there,” she said. “There’s less overhead, and more of the money goes right to the care and services of the residents, and we see higher staffing levels.”
