Salli Pung, Michigan State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, was interviewed by Bridge and said that the size of a facility, chain or non-profit ownership, previous Medicare ratings and payment sources for care did not distinguish nursing homes with COVID-19 from those without it. In other words, broadly speaking, big facilities with large Medicaid populations, 5-star ratings from Medicare and chain ownership fared roughly the same against the virus as others.

New Hampshire State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, Susan Buxton, speaks at a meeting of the State Commission on Aging about the harm that prolonged isolation is inflicting on residents of the state's long-term care facilities. Susan Buxton said the restrictive visitor rules in place at many nursing homes and assisted living facilities are hurting the very people they’re meant to protect, robbing them of both social interaction and access to outside advocates who can raise issues about the quality of their care.

While Gov. Tim Walz has instituted a temporary ban on most evictions in Minnesota, current law provides no way to appeal terminations of medical services at assisted living facilities, which can force people from their homes. “There is no right to due process,” said Cheryl Hennen, Minnesota’s State Long-Term Care Ombudsman.
