Utah nursing homes are struggling to meet residents’ mental health needs, with investigations revealing multiple cases since 2019 where individuals showing suicidal behavior or severe distress did not receive adequate care. A large proportion of residents have mental health conditions, yet many facilities lack properly trained staff and resources to handle complex psychiatric issues. Experts say nursing homes were never designed for this level of mental health care, and systemic gaps often leave them as a default placement for vulnerable individuals. Combined with factors like isolation, aging, and stigma, these shortcomings increase risks for residents, while efforts to improve care, such as policy changes and expanded services, remain inconsistent and slow.
