February NORC Notes: The Effects of the Opioid Crisis

As you may have learned from the news, there is an opioid crisis in America. Every day, more than 115 people in the U.S. die after overdosing on opioids. Opioids include prescription pain relievers such as OxyContin, Vicodin, codeine, morphine, Fentanyl, and many others.  Opioids also include heroin and other synthetic drugs.  When used correctly under a physician’s direction, the medications can be helpful.  Misusing prescription opioids puts the person at risk of dependence and addiction.
