Hawaii State Ombudsman John McDermott was interviewed on two bills that would create new Ombudsman representative positions, expanding access to neighboring islands. Currently, the Hawaii Ombudsman program is only based in Honolulu, making it difficult to reach facilities in other parts of Hawaii. In lieu of full-time staff, the program has been relying on volunteers.
If the program does expand, it will increase access to ombudsmen for many residents, and will make it much easier to address complaints.
