Maryland State Ombudsman, Stevanne Ellis, Interviewed on COVID-19 in Nursing Homes

Across the state of Maryland, family members have had to weigh the pros and cons of having their loved ones live in nursing facilities versus living at home with them. Family members are concerned about the separation that comes from in-person visitation being forbidden as well as being afraid that staff are not taking the proper safety precautions when caring for their loved ones. AARP Maryland has come up with 6 criteria for family members to help them decide if facilities are safe: testing, prevention, PPE, staffing, connection, and communication. Stevanne Ellis, Maryland State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, said health officials are on track to reach their goal of testing every nursing home resident and staff member In Maryland by June 5.
