Several expert witnesses called for the federal government to address inadequate staffing at nursing homes and long-term care facilities in wake of the coronavirus pandemic and its fatal toll on residents and workers.

During times when Ombudsman are not visiting residents in person, programs are finding creative ways to communicate with residents. Alabama Ombudsman program representative, Jona Burklow and A.K. House (Alabama Tombigbee Area Agency on Aging Office), are delivering watermelons to all their nursing homes to celebrate the Fourth of July. The watermelons have stickers with Ombudsman information on them.

Ohio Long-Term Care Ombudsman, Nate Cyrill, is interviewed by News 5 Cleveland and raises awareness about resident’s stimulus checks. They’re already at high risk from COVID-19 and usually unable to visit with loved ones. Now, advocates for the elderly want to raise awareness about seniors’ stimulus checks or Economic Impact Payments (EIPS). 'That money is theirs' "We want people to be aware that they should have received them and that that money is theirs," said Nate Cyrill, Program Director, Long Term Care State Ombudsman.
