State Ombudsman Suzanne Messenger is Interviewed by West Virginia Public Broadcasting on Nursing Home Concerns During COVID-19

Statewide comprehensive testing of nursing homes in West Virginia began April 17th, making them the first state to do so. Suzanne Messenger, the SLTCO, says that although complaint numbers are not above average, many of them are now related to COVID-19. She believes that despite states beginning to relax, focus on nursing homes needs to continue being a priority.

Ombudsman Window Visits in Illinois

Senior Services Plus, a regional Ombudsman program in Alton, Illinois, has adjusted their facility visitation methods in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although their visits would typically be done in person, they are now turning to bi-weekly phone calls and monthly window visits. Through these window visits, SSP Ombudsmen like Tracie Ramel-Smith and Chris Sutton have learned that much of the problems residents are seeing in facilities, come from staffing shortages.

New Jersey State Ombudsman, Laurie Brewer, Talks to the Washington Post About Rising COVID-19 Cases in Nursing Homes

The Washington Post stated that the number of nursing homes publicly reporting cases of COVID-19 has doubled in the past week, with more than 1 in 6 facilities nationwide now acknowledging infections among residents or staff.
